Aluminum Gangway Repair for MV FAITH 1 at Hon Gai Anchorage, Vietnam

1. Introduction

Bacviet Shiprepair team recently completed a professional repair and straightening job for the Aluminum Combination Gangway of bulk carrier MV FAITH 1 at Hon Gai anchorage, Cam Pha area, Quang Ninh, Vietnam.
This project demonstrates our technical capability and on-site response for complex aluminum structure repair works directly onboard vessels, under the supervision of Class PMDS Surveyor.

2. Vessel Information

The Aluminum Combination Gangway, which provides critical access between vessel and shore, had been damaged and deformed due to external impact during previous operations. Immediate restoration was necessary to ensure safe crew access and Class compliance.

3. Scope of Work

Upon receiving the Owner’s request, Bacviet arranged a qualified technical team and full set of specialized tools onboard MV FAITH 1 to perform the following comprehensive repair process:

3.1 Mobilization & Preparation

  • Arrange skilled aluminum welders and technicians to board the vessel at Hon Gai anchorage.
  • Transport all necessary tools and equipment via service boat, including:
    • Aluminum welding machine (for TIG/MIG process)
    • Grinding machine and portable tools
    • Special tools for dismounting the Combination Gangway
    • Support structures and jigs for straightening
    • Dye-penetrant inspection kits
  • Coordinate with Port Authority for work permits and boarding passes.
  • Fabricate temporary steel supports to secure and lift the gangway safely onto deck for inspection and repair.

3.2 Dismounting & Inspection

  • Carefully dismounted the Combination Gangway and transferred it onto deck area using chain blocks and lifting gear.
  • Conducted visual inspection and dye-penetrant testing (DPT) to identify all cracks on frames, joints, and supporting structures.
  • Evaluated deformation level of the gangway structure and prepared straightening plan accordingly.

3.3 Aluminum Repair & Straightening Process

The repair process was executed under strict supervision and safety control in accordance with Class standards and IMO regulations.

  1. Grinding and Cleaning
    • Removed old welds, corrosion marks, and contaminants on aluminum surfaces.
    • Ground out all crack areas for complete fusion.
  2. Aluminum Re-Welding
    • Performed welding by qualified aluminum welders using TIG process.
    • All welding consumables and procedures complied with Bacviet’s WPS for aluminum alloy approved by classification societies.
    • Dye-penetrant test (DPT) applied after welding to verify soundness and absence of surface cracks.
  3. Cold Straightening Process
    • Applied cold-deformation method using custom-made support jigs to restore gangway alignment.
    • No heating was used to preserve the mechanical properties of aluminum alloy.
    • Straightened gangway sections were re-checked for dimensional accuracy and alignment.
  4. Reinforcement Welding & Structural Repair
    • Re-welded all cracked or weakened frames, brackets, and joint supports.
    • Re-assembled ladder connection points and checked locking mechanism.
    • Final polish and surface finishing completed.

3.4 Reinstallation & Testing

  • Re-mounted the Combination Gangway onto its original position using fabricated supports and alignment tools.
  • Verified locking points, handrails, and rolling mechanism functionality.
  • Conducted Load Test under the witness of PMDS Class Surveyor:
    • Test performed in accordance with SOLAS 1974, Regulation II-1/3-9 and IMO MSC.1/Circ.1331 requirements.
    • Confirmed gangway load capacity meets Class design specifications.
  • Issued Repair Report and Load Test Certificate to the Owner and Class after completion.

4. Logistics & Coordination

  • All operations were performed onboard at Hon Gai anchorage without dry-docking, minimizing vessel downtime.
  • Bacviet Shiprepair arranged:
    • Boat service and boat supply
    • Port Authority work permits
    • On-site safety supervision and fire watch
    • Transportation for crew and equipment

Despite challenging weather conditions, the repair was completed safely within two working days with full Class approval.

5. Outcome & Technical Achievement

After completion, the Aluminum Gangway was fully restored to its operational and structural integrity. The deformation was successfully corrected, and all welding joints passed the dye-check test. The gangway was re-installed and load-tested with satisfactory results, reinstating the vessel’s compliance with SOLAS and Class requirements.
